Class Update (Week 11)
April 25, 2024
Theme: Earth Day
Today in class students:
- Brainstormed what a tree "needs" or "has". Cut out these items (leaves, roots, bugs, etc.) and added them to our classroom tree.
- Determined the date and egg as the item for the date according to our pattern.
- Identified the month, day, and date on an actual calendar page; described the weather.
- Wrote the date, circled the month and day of the week, practiced breaking down numbers into 1s and 10s, used tally marks to count, counted up and back from 25.
- Made observations about the plants in the pot. Picked flowers and leaves to add to our compost
- Used critical thinking skills in groups to sort items into natural and man-made groups.
- Found recycling symbols on plastic items and identified the numbers of plastics.
- Practiced following directions to complete an assignment that started a discussion about recycling and other activities that help the Earth.
- Practiced identifying ways at the school site that we could help conserve energy and water.
- Closely examined dirt to observe and identify components that are part of dirt and important to plants.
- Created a class tally of items found in the dirt.
- Made compost jars to include items that come from plants and that can be returned to soil with the help of critters in the dirt.
- Read "Pout Pout Fish Cleans Up the Ocean" by Deborah Diesen to identify items that do not belong in the ocean and to talk about how we can help keep oceans clean.
Your child came home with a jar of "compost". With enough time and a little water, this should be become compost that you can add to your garden. It has carrot peels, newspaper, soil, critters, and dead leaves.

- Used tangrams to build different shapes.

- Wrote the date, circled the month and day of the week, practiced breaking down numbers into 1s and 10s, used tally marks to count, counted up and back from 21.
- Began "Reader's" Theater" using Dr Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham" (Students each have a script and began to practice reading their parts together.)
- Made observations of the pumpkin and nasturtiums growing in the pot outside the class building. Identified flowers, leaves, and baby pumpkins. Looked at clovers to see if we could find 4-leaf clovers.
-Looked inside fruits to find out where seeds come from.
-Sorted, compared, and described a variety of different seeds.
-Made predictions about what could be inside a seed.
-Dissected lima bean seeds.

- Jumped and "leaped" in a 3:1 pattern (jump, jump, jump, leap) following a taped pattern on the floor.
-Researched about a frog as an animal that leaps. (Drew a frog, drew something it eats, drew its habitat). Took notes on what frogs "can", "have", "are".
- Made predictions about how many feet students can leap/jump. Tested predictions and recorded actual results on a graph.
- Made and used to a model to see how one rotation of the earth is one day, and one revolution of the earth around the sun is one year.

- Shared about chores done at home. Talked about what a president is.
-Read "Duck for President"
- Exercised using motions from the chores done by the animals on the farm in the book ("cleaned under the bed", "swept", "weeded", " ground coffee beans"
- Drew Duck covered with something from the story. Wrote responses to the story.
-"Met" Abraham Lincoln and George Washington (found their birthdays marked on the calendar)
-Sorted coins (nickels, pennies, dimes, and quarters) by color, shape, size, and texture. Identified Washington and Lincoln on the coins.
-Used coins to make numbers such as 6, 10, 15...
-Made IDs and registered to vote.
-Voted for Duck or Mr. Brown for president.

-Found the new moon and "Lunar New Year" on the calendar.
- Wrote the date, circled the month and day of the week, practiced breaking down numbers into 1s and 10s, used tally marks to count, and counted up and back from 8.
- Collected weather data using thermometers.
- Reported that the groundhog did not see his shadow.
- Talked about New Year's traditions that we have.
- Read the story about how the years are named for animals on lunar calendar years. Used the story to sequence ordinal numbers first through twelfth.
- Identified this year as 2024 and the year of the dragon.
- Used a chart to determine what year students were born. (Rooster - ~2017, or Dog ~2018)

- Determined the date - Found where "1" should go on the calendar by using the days of the week.
- Identified the month, day, and date on an actual calendar page, found the number of days in the month, described the weather.
- Wrote the date, circled the month and day of the week, began to break down numbers into 1s and 10s, began using tally marks to count, counted up and back from 1 (no negatives :)
- Practiced 5 exercise positions as we counted by 1s, 10s, 2s, and sang the alphabet.
-Read nonfiction text about groundhogs and identified "can", "have", "are" facts about groundhogs. Wrote facts.
- Observed our weather and made predictions about whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow on 2/2.
-Held and used thermometers to measure temperature inside and outside the classroom. Practiced using 10s to identify temperature for both F and C scales.
-Read and colored a book about the four seasons. Identified characteristics of the seasons and reasons for their favorite season.
-Used pop-it mats as bingo cards to read, identify, and say cvc words.

- compared shapes with snowflake cards to identify that snowflakes have 6 sides like a hexagon.

New: This semester, each of the students will have an opportunity to share about themselves. I send home an "All About Me" page for you to complete together and bring back to class on the date on the sticky note attached to the page.

It was WONDERFUL to see your students yesterday!
Our theme for the day was snowflakes.
Today in class students:
- Searched for snowflake pictures that matched the ones on their desk.
- sang the months and days
- determined the date
- Identified the month, day, an date on an actual calendar page, found the number of days in the month, counted the number of Thursdays and Mondays in January.
